Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

IJHELD invites contributions in the form of research articles, reviews, reports, essays, opinion pieces, photography, and poetry.

All submissions should be written in accessible language for the widest possible audience of readers interested in young children’s early learning and development, including, but not limited to:

  • families
  • caregivers
  • educators
  • service providers
  • researchers
  • policymakers
  • advocates
  • representatives of non-governmental organizations

Authors are encouraged to provide hyperlinks to related scholarly research and works cited for readers who wish to delve deeper.

Submissions should be original and not previously published elsewhere. They will undergo blind review, will be returned to the author if revisions are suggested, and will be copyedited and proofread in-house.  Publishing in IJHELD is free; there are no article publishing charges for authors.

Submissions can be made in two ways: by creating an author account on this Online Journal System, or by emailing documents to the editor at 

Where possible, please submit manuscripts in Microsoft Word format. The maximum length is 5,000 words. To ensure anonymity during the review process, the name and affiliation of the author(s) should not appear anywhere on the manuscript or contribution.

Create a separate title page containing the submission title, author name(s) and affiliation(s), and a brief abstract (150 word maximum). Upload the title page when prompted to upload a supplementary file.

Contributions are accepted for publication in IJHELD with the understanding that they have been submitted to this journal only and have not been previously published elsewhere. Authors are responsible for factual accuracy of contributions and for obtaining permission to reproduce text or illustrations from other publications.


IJHELD uses The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition (APA) as a style manual for citations, references, and headings.

The following examples reflect APA style. Please ensure that all in-text citations match the list of references.
